Dub Mixing!
Who would've guessed that Jackpot! did dub mixes? -by Larry Crane
Last year I wrote a Tape Op End Rant entitled “On Losing Control” about doing some dub remixes for the duo Odelet. Last week Odelet and I spent 6 days doing “straight” and dub mixes for three albums in a row at Jackpot!, and here’s a video that Mr. “Everlasting Tape” took on my iPhone.
The sessions originated in Cubase by Odelet, then processed (pre-mixed) and printed to 16-track tape (Otari MX-80) via Pro Tools and outboard gear, then mixed back through the Rupert Neve Designs RND 5088 console to 1/4-inch Otari MTR-10 where it was captured to digital off the repro head via BURL B80 Mothership BAD4M converters. We also printed a mix straight off the console for a safety, plus 4 stereo bus mixes just in case.
Live effects processing I was doing featured:
Alesis MidiVerb II (setting #29) digital reverb
EMT 140 plate reverb, damper wide open
Demeter Amplification Real Reverb RV-1D spring reverb
Lexicon PCM60 digital reverb large rooms settings
Line 6 EchoPro delay set to long Ping Pong delay
room mics and speakers for re-amping/room ambience

Love it. So these dub mixes were a performance, correct? You captured the process of muting tracks, adding effects, and so on, in real-time, and that was the mix?
